And besides, I believe that the 98 new beetle has an ALH engine, the 99.5+ ALH's were in Golf's and Jettas, you can find out my looking on top of the timing belt engine cover. Good luck! Dave EDIT: I did a wiki real quick, and it seems that the ALH is used in the NB 01/98 - 06/04, so you probably have an ALH engine.
Our guess is that the 1.9-litre motor would feel a little underpowered trying to lug such a weight – especially up hills – and that 2.0-litre TDi would perform much better.
When the first 2003 TDI engine appeared in 2.0, the 1.9 TDI slowly began to pull. Unfortunately, the new diesel proved to be more unreliable. So, if there is a choice between a 1.9 TDI and a 2.0 TDI car, choose the older generation of engines, even though it offers slightly worse performance, and certainly better choose the 130hp 1.9 TDI

Its quite informative compared to other car manufacturers! MY10 Audi A4 B8 Avant 2.0Tdi S-Line with every optional extra courtesy of the previous owner.
The 1.9 TDi engine gives the Fabia all the power it needs to be a proper all-rounder, as at home on the motorway as on the high street. A good handling car is not always the one that sticks to
